چکیده

Objective: To evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of crude aqueous and ethanol stem bark extracts of Pterocarpus santalinus (Fabaceae) using CCl 4 induced hepatic damage in male Wistar albino rats. Department of Botany, Materials and Methods: The aqueous (45 mg/ml) and ethanol (30 mg/ml) extracts of S.R.N.M.N. College of Applied stem bark in 1% gum tragacanth was administered orally for 14 days and the hepatoprotective Sciences, Shimoga, activity studied in CCl induced hepatic damage model. The hepatoprotective activity was 4 Karnataka, India. assessed using various biochemical parameters like serum bilirubin, protein, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase along with histopathologiReceived:31.3.2005 cal studies of liver tissue. Revised: 29.8.2005 Results: There was a significant increase in serum levels of bilirubin, alanine transaminase, Accepted: 18.9.2005 aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase with a decrease in total protein level, in the CCl 4 treated animals, reflecting liver injury. In the aqueous and ethanol extracts treated Correspondence to: B.K. Manjunatha animals there was a decrease in serum levels of the markers and significant increase in total E-Mail: protein, indicating the recovery of hepatic cells. Histological study of aqueous extract treated [email protected] group exhibited moderate accumulation of fatty lobules and cellular necrosis where as ethanol extract treated animals revealed normal hepatic cords without any cellular necrosis and fatty infiltration. Conclusion: The ethanol and aqueous stem bark extract of P. santalinus afforded signifi cant protection against CCl 4 induced hepatocellular injury.

Species distribution models: ecological explanation and prediction of an endemic and endangered plant species (Pterocarpus santalinus L.f.)

Pterocarpus santalinus L.f. (Red Sanders) is an endemic and endangered species largely confined to the southern portion of the Eastern Ghats, Andhra Pradesh, India. To understand its ecological and geographic distribution, we used ecological niche modelling (ENM) based on field sample-based distributional information, in relation to climatic and topographic datasets. Before modelling, hierarchi...

Effect of gamma irradiation on germination growth and biochemical parameters of Pterocarpus santalinus, an endangered species of Eastern Ghats

Seeds of highly medicinal plant,P.santalinuswere subjected to different doses(0, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 Gy) of gamma radiation using Cosource and observed for germination, growth and biochemical attributes. Germination percentage was found to be highest at 50 Gy whereas, speed of germination increased up to 100 Gy. A threefold increase in vigor and growth in terms of dry mass wa...

In Vitro Seed Germination and Induction of Enhanced Shoot Multiplication in Pterocarpus santalinus Linn.f: An Endemic Medicinal Plant of Seshachalam Hills, Tirumala

Pterocarpus santalinus belongs to fabaceae family and is one of the endemic and endangered medicinal plant species of seshachalam hills, Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh state, India. In the present study we have successfully demonstrated the in vitro regenartion of this plant through shoot bud culture. The seeds germinated sequentially on plastic trays and transferred polythene bags for 21 days served...

Antibacterial Activity of Pterocarpus santalinus

Antibacterial activity of leaf and stem bark of Pterocarpus santalinus (Fabaceae) was investigated. The antibacterial activity was tested against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Among the two extracts tested, stem bark extract exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against the tested organisms. The stem bark extract showed maximum activity against Enterobacter aerogenes...

Pterocarpus santalinus ameliorates streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus via anti-inflammatory pathways and enhancement of insulin function

Objective(s): Morbidity and mortality due to diabetes mellitus (DM) result in exorbitant psycho-economical costs, so there is a strong need to create new strategies and drugs for controlling DM. The aim of the current study was to investigate the anti-diabetic effect of the aqueous extract of Pterocarpus santalinus on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DM as compared to glus...
